Beverly Hills
In Beverly Hills, Ca., Dr. Daniel Gould offers Inverted Nipple Repair.
Inverted nipples affect between ten and 20 percent of women in the United States. Inverted or “shy” nipples occur when one or both nipples on a woman’s breast pull inward. Inverted nipples can happen to men but are primarily seen in women. Often, the nipple reverses after a change in temperature or stimulation; however, some nipples remain inverted permanently.
Typically, having an inverted nipple does not contribute to any health complications and does not affect the sensitivity of your nipples. Regular stimulation may help your nipples protrude, but this method does not work for everyone. However, some women are embarrassed about the look of their nipples—whether they are changing at the gym or during intimate moments. If you desire a permanent option, a Beverly Hills Inverted Nipple Repair is an ideal solution. However, there are two types of surgical options—one that preserves the milk ducts and one that does not.
Taking the stigma out of talking about it.
During puberty, nipple inversion is caused when the lactiferous (milk) ducts fail to develop, or due to inflammation of these ducts because of cancer, mastitis, or previous breast surgery. When either tightened bands of tissues or your milk ducts are tethered to the nipple, the nipple stays inverted. Inverted Nipple Repair cuts this tissue and enables the nipple to protrude naturally.
The procedure is typically done in-office as an outpatient treatment. While this minor surgery can interfere with a woman’s ability to breastfeed, a newer approach releases the fibers surrounding and tethering the nipple. During your consultation, Dr. Gould will examine your breasts and discuss your options to help you achieve the look you desire.

Experience and Knowledge that Matter
Your procedure only requires local anesthesia and takes about 30 minutes or less. Dr. Gould begins by making a small incision at the base of your nipple and uses surgical scissors to release the fibrous tethers that keep the nipple from naturally protruding. Then, a couple of stitches are placed on maintaining nipple projection. Dr. Gould then applies a protective wrap to prevent infection and promote healing.
The newer surgical approach involves Dr. Gould cutting the connective tissues and releasing the surrounding fibers that hold the nipple in, but he performs the dissection parallel to the milk ducts, which preserves the ability to breastfeed in the future. Then sutures are placed in an outward position with dissolvable stitches.

Minimal to No Downtime
Most of our Beverly Hills Inverted Nipple Repair patients can drive themselves home and return to their daily activities the same day if so desired. There is typically little to no discomfort from this procedure, but over-the-counter medication like Tylenol will suffice if needed. Your incisions are small, and once they heal, scars are minimally visible, if at all. You will be able to see results immediately, and they are permanent.
During your procedure, you receive a local anesthetic and are very comfortable. Your nipples will be sensitive while healing, but you won’t experience significant pain.
Inverted Nipple Repair is a safe and effective cosmetic procedure. Complications and recurrence are rare. Nipple inversion can recur, and studies have shown it may be due to underlying stromal attachments. The risk of this is between 2-9% depending on the degree of inversion pre-op. Other complications may include loss of nipple sensitivity or the inability to breastfeed, and there can be some prolonged healing as well as small scars or discoloration that may need treatment with injections or lasers post-op.
Once Dr. Gould can assess your nipple inversion during your consultation, he will devise a treatment plan and discuss the cost of the procedure. However, The price may differ with each patient because it is common to combine inverted nipple repair with other surgeries, such as breast augmentation or breast lift.
Inverted nipple repair is not considered medically necessary and is not covered by medical insurance. However, Dr. Gould offers payment and financing options for your convenience.
Your minimally invasive surgical procedure is performed with a local anesthetic, so there is no need for someone to drive you home.
